We are going to Miami! Part II

June 27, 2012 by Greg

Magnolia Americas is growing! Isa and Greg will join Bill in the new office in mid-July. Our first post revealed Isa’s expectations, now it’s Greg‘s time to share his hopes and concerns.

My expectations from this experience ? I’m hoping – and looking forward! – to help build a great local team in the US. Magnolia is a pretty rich and flexible product, and I’d love to share some of the expertise I’ve gained over the years. I’ll be helping Bill with recruiting talent, and guide them around the product and the company. I’m also going to help Bill with pre-sales – until our new recruits are up to speed ! We have quite a vast market to explore in the US and I’m sure there will be a lot of exciting projects coming along. Next to that, I’m pretty sure I’ll be more than busy with continuing some of the infrastructure work I’m doing in Basel at the moment, as well as, perhaps more intensively since we’ll be sharing a closer timezone, work with Zak on community development.

Of course, I can’t deny there’s a much more personal appeal to the whole thing. A very welcome change; Basel has become a little unsurprising and predictable to me. Also, wide eyes, gaping mouth and other signs of surprise, wonder and exclamation marks of shock ! The big, obvious, and smaller, subtler, differences in culture, behavior, life, colors, sounds and voices.

In less pompous-I-try-too-hard words, I’m expecting a lot from the experience. I’m hoping to meet great people;  I’m looking forward for diversity in all sorts of domains: from professional activities to, well, “personal” activities: seeing animals I’ve never seen! Going to Disneyland! Visiting incredibly oversized shops! Getting a tan! (read: getting sunburned like an idiot). Going to what will undoubtedly seem like cheap concerts (read: decently priced, unlike in Switzerland). Sending pictures to friends back in Europe with a caption that reads “I’m on a boat!”. Having a hard time not exploding of laughter if I see “over the top” people like err, you know, those you see in video clips and stuff. Hmm. Generally having a good time, and coming back home with plenty of motivation !
